THE MCKENNA CENTER, located in the basement of St. Aloysius Church, continues the mission of Fr. Horace McKenna, S.J. to the poor and marginalized in our city, assisting those in need and empowering them to move from dependence to inter-dependence. The Drop-in Center for men provides a substantial meal, showers, laundry facilities, informal counseling, support group meetings, job search assistance and other support toward a more stable lifestyle. When necessary, the staff makes referrals to other resources.

Emergency Assistance: Emergency food bags are available daily for families, senior citizens and the disabled. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, holiday food baskets are distributed. If funds are available, the Center assists with rent and utilities.

The Winter Night Shelter hosts five to six men. The guests commit themselves to form community, to find a job and to save money in order to move toward independent living.

Hypothermia Shelter: When the Washington, D.C. government declares a hypothermia emergency, the Center operates an emergency night shelter for men.

Recovery Programs: Twelve-step meetings for alcohol and drugs meet every day except Saturdays.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction Referrals:  The Father McKenna Center has the capacity to help those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction to get into treatment.

Empowerment through Education:  The McKenna Center sponsors lectures and forums designed to inform citizens of the causes of poverty and homelessness in our city, nation and world and it conducts immersion programs for college and high school students.
