At PeaceMeal, we use the setting of a friendly dinner with nutritious food to provide comfort to those on the fringes of society. The anonymous people of our streets are greeted as friends and given a place of honor, as Jesus would have. PeaceMeal is served on Wednesday evenings. Volunteers from St Aloysius and other parishes and organizations, give their time on Tuesday evenings to prepare the meal and Wednesday evening to serve over 300 guests a week.
Volunteer Cooks Needed
We are in need of back up cooks. Food preparation begins around 2:00 pm on Wednesdays, and continues through the end of serving, at about 8:00 pm. We make simple, repetitive meals, so while some experience in the kitchen is useful, on-the-job training will be all you need. Some of the work--e.g., lifting heavy pots and pans--can be physically demanding, so we prefer having two cooks on duty each Wednesday. Our goal is to add two or three assistant cooks to our team, to spread the work out and accommodate possible absences of our existing cooks due to travel or illness. Your commitment would likely be for a minimum of one or two Wednesdays per month. If you are interested in joining our friendly and dedicated group of volunteers, or if you have questions about volunteer opportunities with PeaceMeal, please call Dave Belli at 202-329-1910, or Ronde Baquie, at 301-266-5919.
Donations are always welcome.
